There is precedent of turning old nuclear power plants into gas plants (such as Pathfinder in the 90s and Fort St. Vrain today). Is it theoretically possible to go the other way, to turn coal or natural gas plants into nuclear?

thats exactly why china is doing this, they have a lot of young capital tied up in new coal plants

and its what drove the UK to use AGRs....the back end is the same as for coal.

yes but by the end Torness and Hunterston were the same design. It does work. Also, the AGR design is perfect for coupling to molten salt thermal storage. So you could half overnight capital costs by adding a very large salt bath to the site. boom

Was too expensive, but a salt bath could half those costs. Plus, using off peak wind power to heat up same salt bath and then convert back to electricity has an overall effeciency of about 45%.....not great, but at zero extra capital cost.

Not much advantage over CO2 at these temps. The reactors just have a finite time. Irradiation damage will still happen. The cores have secondary cooling so the graphite is not so hot. They just need a fixed 35-40 year life.
