There is precedent of turning old nuclear power plants into gas plants (such as Pathfinder in the 90s and Fort St. Vrain today). Is it theoretically possible to go the other way, to turn coal or natural gas plants into nuclear?

Not much advantage over CO2 at these temps. The reactors just have a finite time. Irradiation damage will still happen. The cores have secondary cooling so the graphite is not so hot. They just need a fixed 35-40 year life.

"a salt bath could half those costs." How?

retain heat generated off peak and deliver it on peak to the steam generators. The cost of producing heat is fixed and the output is optimum when constant. So use one AGR to power the steam generators of two at peak power.
