Hartz 4 reforms by Schroeder killed the recovering working class in the East. High employment by slashing wages and working conditions. Followed by mass migration from eastern Europe, followed by the migrant flood of the last 3 years. Social democracy doesn't have good cred there

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The cause of this was the process of de-industrialisation in the 90's. Thousands of factories closed down in the East, the region lost its industrial base. There was definitely no mass emigration from Eastern Europe. Eastern Europeans weren't allowed to work

In Germany until 2014. Hartz 4 was a bad idea from the start, but it alone is not the reason for the rise of the far right in East Germany. Source: I'm an East German man in my 40's who left because things were desperately bad in the former East.

Of course, but it killed off the hope of real recovery for many. Unemployment in the village i lived in was 28% in 2004. Had to fall but the SDP went for the cheap sell and crushed conditions. Hence so many left.

I'm a former SPD voter. In the East the SPD is toast, it will take them years to recover.

I think the Greens will max out and suppress any recovery, see UK history of the liberal democrats in Scotland. Once new comers take over the old party just lacks the growth medium to recover from its poor reputation.

Totally agree! The Greens will gain voters in the more affluent regions of the East, and yes, they do exist! As for rural East Germany, not looking good for the centre left... A lost cause.

Like Labour in the UK, the SDP vote was effectively a coalfield vote. The two are still remarkably tied. The renewable economy (im not a fan of) and the energy culture that goes with it will support Greens over SDP. With SNP in Scotland it was oil.
