The point is countries can and have done perfectly well low levels of immigration. Australia is very selective, Luxembourg is largely fed by other EU15 countries. Low skilled labour less so.

Of course countries can make choices, and there are no ideal solutions, only trade-offs. But the data are pretty suggestive about this trade-off. And the examples go the other way too. Japan's attitude to foreign workers has been bad for their economy. https://asia.nikkei.com/Economy/Abe-vows-to-bring-in-more-foreign-workers …

but has preserved social cohesion and culture; very low violent crime and mugging rates too

Yes, trade-offs. And culture, perhaps more significant. Is Japan the best model for British society and economy? You’d rather be like Japan than Australia or NZ or Switzerland?

All have their merits, in terms of size of population and economy Japan is closer. Much more diverse industrial sector. Proves the UK could restore our industries.

We could try to be like Japan, I suppose. Virtually all internal, and a very different economy to ours in many ways, no link to migration

So the UK is like Japan except it isn’t, but should be more like it, except where it shouldn’t. Lack of foreign workers seems to be the only criterion for judging Japan a better model for the UK than the anglosphere nations.

Both island nations, both industrialised and wealthy, Japan far more so, one chose mass immigration, one didn't. Not simply foreign workers but people from abroad, a great number of whom have never worked. For migration Japan looks pretty good, Korea too.

Aus and NZ also fit your criteria, and are culturally more similar to us (can’t just be like Japan without somehow changing British culture to be more Japanese). Difference is growth of >100% since 1991 vs 25% in Japan. Trade-offs and culture, as discussed.

They are still commodity based economies, very different to us, also have LOTS of land to develop
