On the @JoeRogan Experience, I showed graphs showing the sudden and sharp rise of depression and self-harm among U.S. teens, esp. girls, after 2011. But I FORGOT TO SHOW THE SUICIDE GRAPH; see below: Here's the key section of our talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI6rX96oYnY … #TheCoddlingpic.twitter.com/bmbO9Bx7RN

In #TheCoddling, @glukianoff and I say why we think the spike for Gen Z has 2 major causes: Overprotection, since the 1990s, and social media, since around 2010. Here's the graph I showed on @joerogan for major depression:pic.twitter.com/KLY1ElyjLR

In the video clip I explain why social media affects teen girls much more adversely than teen boys. You can see the different effects in this graph of changes in self-harm leading to hospitalization. No change for boys. but the change for teen girls is massive, esp. for pre-teens, for whom the rate has nearly tripled. This also shows that the rise in depression is NOT just a change in comfort discussing mental health; this, and suicide, are NOT self-report data.pic.twitter.com/RjfWks41dQ

Note that the increase for women in their 20s is small and linear. They got social media in college or later; it wasn't so damaging. But middle school is really hard, esp. for girls. Social media makes it much harder, may cause chronic stress for many.

This is why I am on a campaign to encourage parents to adopt 3 norms: 1) all screens out of bedroom 30 min before bedtime; 2) no social media until high school; 3) time limits on total daily device use (such as 2 hrs or less)

Oh, and one more graph, showing how sharp the divide is between millennials and Gen Z. This is the rate of self-report among US college students of having a "psychological disorder". Rates increase as Gen Z replaces millennials:pic.twitter.com/tIYPNX06cg

I am digging more deeply into the vast and complicated research literature on the links between social media and mental health in this Google Doc listing abstracts. Inviting researchers to critique it too:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w-HOfseF2wF9YIpXwUUtP65-olnkPyWcgF5BiAtBEy0/edit?userstoinvite=iamgoddard@gmail.com&ts=5c5e549a&actionButton=1 …

I am a bit confused by this. Neither you nor Jean have expertise in adolescent depression and both publicly share the view that tech use causes it; so the idea that you are self appointed gatekeepers to the review and comment does not seem like the best place to start?

Also you didn’t address his argument and instead cited his credentials which is the argument of a pretentious child. I live next to an addiction center for video games and social media in Washington and have several friends who committed suicide from bullying online.

Social media makes mean girls even meaner. It's easier to demonstrate to unpopular girls that they are excluded. All the time. Standards set by Instagram models may also play a role. Boys don't care about popularity that much. They just play games on their PCs.
