Why the growing practice of requiring all professors at a university to submit a "diversity statement" to get hired or promoted is a bad idea; it opens the door to ideological litmus tests. By @jflier, former dean of Harvard Med School.https://twitter.com/chronicle/status/1081218755471044614 …

My university includes "sensitivity to diversity" as part of student evaluations. But interestingly, their definition includes viewpoint diversity (political orientation) in addition to demographic diversity. Helpful, or still a bad idea? @HdxAcademyhttps://twitter.com/rskudesia/status/1081236996377493504 …

Interesting. What's your take on including "sensitivity to diversity" as part of student feedback forms? My university uses these; unsure how student responses might influence T&P decisions. pic.twitter.com/MHgbZMkR7E

My suspicion is that a "sensitivity to diversity" component in instructor evaluations would make instructors much less likely to tackle controversial areas.

Yes. Including diversity of thought along with the other dimensions does little to curb that chilling effect on independently thinking professors. It might only help do so for the students, depending on how the university handles abuses of professorial authority in this regard.

At @UniofOxford and other U.K. uni’s, one is now required, as of 2016, to sign a fealty diversity statement in order to get a teaching certification. It’s bonkers. One would think that Oxford of all places would be willing to make a Chicago-style statement against such nonsense.

Is there a complaint here? University of San Francisco is a private, Jesuit institution with a particular mission. If you don't support that mission, that's fine. But why would they want to hire you if can't talk about how your work fits their mission?

Our local community college has required something like this for over 10 years in hiring for academic positions. These ideas have been creeping into the public school system for a long time.

I wonder if they would be so sanguine if conservative administrators were to require incoming hires to submit a “loyalty statement” or perhaps an “oath.”
