Teaching @EinsteinMed students today about harm reduction: Me: What do we communicate to someone who injects drugs when we prescribe them sterile needles? Student: That their life matters, and that we care about their health, whether they continue to use or not? 👏🏼 ❤️ 🏥

And this is why I love you. Actually the best care I got as a trans woman was at Einstein, compassionate, responsive, and they listened when I said something was wrong, unlike another hospital in the Bronx. (had 2 herniated discs adding to my pain, from carrying my son in Pride)

Hospitalist in deeply red country. Cis-gendered people complain too of not being listened to. You and all deserve better. Very sorry you were treated that way, doubly so if it was trans-phobia.

I love this. I do EMS in a city with a high IVDU population and give a LOT of Narcan. Addiction = disease, addicts = people. Thank you for this!

So I’m on an infectious disease service at the moment, a lot of IVDU and a lot of HIV/AIDS with OI. For what appeared to be the first time, the team got curious about what safe needle exchanges might exist in our city, because I asked and even the attending didn’t know. 😯

Fantastic! As an aside— i also prescribe syringes even though available OTC in Mass. to minimize barriers (financial and otherwise). Do you still do any outpatient primary care? I have found this isnt a common practice among PCPs...would love to get a group together to discuss.

Unfortunately, not any more. Tho I did Rx syringes/needled when I was an attending (really a chief, but I was functionally an attending). Sadly, had a pharmacist (in our own clinic) who refused to fill Rx as he felt it was “enabling”. Thankfully, we have good SEP access in NYC.
