Back in the day, iPhone accelerated the evolution. It's difficult to see that now, but it really was the case - innovation was stalling before iPhone.

The PSP was the iPhone before the iPhone. What we didn't have then was reliable Wi-Fi and what Sony lacked was a mobile carrier.

Also useful to note all the prominent technologies and sites that did exist in September 2008 … Google Facebook Twitter GitHub WhatsApp Amazon, including AWS Reddit YouTube Flickr Tumblr Netflix streaming iPhone Android… first commercially available phone was in September '08!
