I admire the earnest optimism of 30 year old programmers writing solemn thinkpieces about important lessons they’ve learned as a “mid-career engineer”, implying they’re going to retire in their 40s
I never considered I’d be able to retire in my 40s, and it’s a good thing I wasn’t counting on that, because I don’t have much time left!

I'm relatively sure people will pay me to do things like fix linker errors for the rest of my life, but I'd happily be wrong

I do believe most people change the nature of what they do as they get older when it comes to such fields as this: if not move into management, then at least be more choosy in what they do and for whom. Those that have it in them I expect will teach in person or write books.
