What about CS continuing education for adults? Do you think it's reasonable or necessary?
-
I think there are good options right now for adults that want to learn. The industry is quite meritocratic too. If you can code, you'll get hired even without a degree. But everyone who spends 12 years in school should at least have some programming literacy.

If software engineer can easily earn 5x teacher's salary, why would anyone with good understanding of code want to teach in a public school?

Computer Science != Programming ability If schools want to prepare students for the future they should teach 'Algorithmic Thinking. Ie problem solving in a way that considers complexity. It can be applied to a lot more domains and acts as a good prereq to coding.

ITT, a lot of people get turned off to programming as a viable career because the stuff you build in an intro course is useless as far as practical application goes. I'm saying this from experience. A CS class in high school is the reason I didn't start until I was 23.

If only I had that in 1995, let alone kids needing it in 2015.
