Headline on an article in Hong Kong’s once outspoken South China Morning Post about the nomination of the HK pro-democracy movement for the Nobel peace prize: ‘Another silly season for Nobel Peace Prize Nominations’. Someone’s playing it safe.

The BBC's video: Ghulzira Auyelkhan tells on camera how she, a female camp detainee, was given the job of handcuffing naked Uyghur girls to beds so that the Han men could go in and rape them. The men paid money to pick which girl they wanted to rape.

More disturbing evidence from the BBC about rape & torture in Uighur 're-education' camps. 'President Xi looms large over the camps. His image & slogans adorn the walls.' Charles Parton, China expert: 'There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that this is Xi Jinping's policy."

Jailing Alexei Navalny won’t win Vladimir Putin enough time to silence the opposition. And if something happens to Navalny while he’s inside, that really will be the beginning of the end. As in 1991, Russia is slow to move, but once it gets going the old order won’t last.

This is the most exciting book of classical scholarship I have read. shows that poetic metres carry meanings of their own. In my dissertation, I explore whether this is the case in Greek and Danish poetry as well. I hope it is!

2 Feb is Candlemas. On the excellent Eleanor Parker quotes an old rhyme: 'If Candlemas Day be fair & bright/Winter will have another flight;/If on Candlemas Day it be shower & rain/Winter is gone & will not come again.' It's bright today where I am....

Now Donald Trump isn't putting out his angry, weird stuff, the Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia is trying to fill the gap. She's the one who suggests that W Coast wildfires may be caused by a space laser controlled by Jewish bankers.

Wouldn’t it be great if President & his government were ALSO “seriously concerned” about the detentions of Zimbabwean opposition leaders, journalists & civil society folks? It is 9724 km from South Africa to Myanmar, yet it is only an hour away to Harare

She’s made it much harder for the international community to rally around her as they did before however. Who wants to champion a woman who excused mass rape, mass displacement, and arguably a full blown genocide?

let a great many of her supporters down. But she knew she was inching round the rim of a volcano by heading a civilian govt in a state dominated by the Burmese military. Now the volcano has erupted.

A deeply concerning story. Freelance photographer arrested for taking photographs at a protest & given restrictive bail conditions which undermine his ability to do his job. Reminded of a case I acted in 5 years ago, against Russia. Serious issues. 1/

Rwanda is ranked best in Africa in managing Covid-19. It is doing 4000 tests a day with a population of 12 million people only. It is ranked 6th worldwide. Zimbabwe is wealthier than Rwanda. This shows that LEADERSHIP matters in the evolution of a country
