Cat Person is a very good short story. I empathized with the protagonist, but I also empathized with Robert, who, until the very end, is just a clueless boob having fantasies projected onto him.

I was Robert for a bit, years ago, including the bitterness & anger. The "why won't somebody just tell me what I'm doing wrong?" feeling. The not understanding that it simply isn't safe for women to do so.

What keeps people from becoming Robert - becoming Pepes / MRAs and other malignant misogynists - is empathy and a willingness to grow and find understanding. But it has to come from you. Nobody else can do it for you.

And it's difficult and frustrating and heartbreaking. It's like learning another language but nobody wants to teach you any of the words - except for people who, it turns out, don't speak the language any better than you do.

But it's worth it, in the end. To keep seeing half of the population as less than yourself, as less than human, as a puzzle to be solved rather than as human beings, just means you're going to stay alone and incel and angry forever.
