After Plan S, Here's Plan U: Funders Should Require All Research To Be Posted First As A #Preprint - https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20190130/06480841494/after-plan-s-heres-plan-u-funders-should-require-all-research-to-be-posted-first-as-preprint.shtml … sounds good; let's do it

It does nothing to rein in the exploitive practices of publishers. 2/2

I think it does, by bypassing them... peer review can be added later if desired

With all due respect that's pretty niave to think that publishers will just allow authors to add peer reviewed manuscripts for free. It does not tackle the structural problems of for profit publishing at all.

authors own the copyright; publishers can do nothing if authors keep it, as they should... the biggest mistake is when they assign it to publishers...

What is to stop publishers with name and impact factor recognition to just say "we will not accept preprint manuscripts with these terms" ? Cynically speaking, if I was a publisher, this is exactly what I would do. 1/2

they can say it, but authors should just go elsewhere - everyone knows impact factors are worthless; not that hard...

Can one realistically expect young researchers risk not being able to publish in top journals if they post a preprint with unacceptable terms that top journals do not permit? Only institutions that can challenge this are the ones funding research. 2/2

Most journals in biomedicine, “top” or not, will consider preprints now, without conditions. Those that don't lose out on the chance to publish great science that goes elsewhere. And @biorxivpreprint manuscripts can be submitted directly to 140 journals, with more coming.

I agree this is a good starting point and I plan to keep using Biorxiv, but it only gets us half way towards the goal of unadulterated access to peer reviewed knowledge. In my opinion. 2/2

Yes I agree that is a good starting point but the main issue still stands: The general public does not get access to final peer reviewed manuscripts. Peer review is done for free by researchers, and the public/tax payers do not have access to peer reviewed research they fund. 1/2
