I grew up in a quiet environment where reading was just something we did to stave off the tedium. Imagine my surprise when this became “cool” ten years into my officership. Still astounded that professional reading is something requiring advocacy.
Reading widely is essential. Bragging about how many books you’ve read betrays your own insecurities. Practical knowledge is the goal, not intellectual ostentation.

Sure, maybe Mattis is insecure and just trying to compensate for how dumb he feels. Seems more likely to me, though, that he is trying to get SMs to read more, that he thinks this is really important, and that he's using his fame to help bring that about. 1/
