Thread. If crime declines and fewer people are arrested and prosecuted, are those who still get arrested the ‘worst of the worst’? This idea makes sense and drives a lot of policymaking. But, it turns out, the ‘worst of the worst’ idea may be a myth. Read on… 1/n

25% of jail & prison inmates have opioid addiction, but less than 1% of jails & prisons offer FDA approved medications for treatment, even tho it improves behavior while in prison, reduces illicit drug use after & makes it more likely people will continue treatment over time.

Dunking on Philly is good social media fun. But here's the thing: Philly is the poorest big city in the US, with a huge disabled population. These problems are not solving themselves:

Bravo . AW: New York City does not use “stop and frisk.” The biggest city in this country does not use “stop and frisk.” AG: That’s not true.

Mark Twain metaphorically summarizes my journalism career. "He wanted to be a cowboy. What is he today? Nothing but a university professor. Will he ever be a cowboy? It is hardly conceivable."

Also in 2019: Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, who admitted he's exposed all nine of his children to chickenpox. “We found a neighbor that had it, and I went and made sure every one of them got it.

The idea that somehow we are at the end of the opioid crisis, rather than somewhere in the middle, is wrong. For instance, , "historically, every opioid epidemic has been followed by a stimulant epidemic."

Had a boss early on who would say in his good southern drawl, "If you are gonna show 'em a bear, bring out the bear!" Words I've lived by.

Adjusting for the aging population, the employment rate is now well above its prerecession level. Still well below the level of the late 1990s/early 2000s though. And with inflation still low, there's no obvious reason we can't get back there.

In grad school, I had the great fortune to take macro with Ned Gramlich right before he want onto the Fed Board. This wisdom of the day was that inflation spiked when unemployment went under 5%. It's a new world....

An important piece by ⁦⁩. “The myth that social inequalities are caused by biological differences blames those marginalized by structural injustices for their own disadvantages...”

I'm not defending this statement, I'm just saying with a 95th percentile degree of certainty that your average policymaker does not understand regression as well as Neil Gorsuch.

I definitely think we should talk about shade deserts. From a crime perspective, the key is less disorganization + more prosocial mechanisms. That means the benefits of maintained places w/trees and shade overwhelm the costs of [slightly] reduced surveillance.

Half of suicide attempts occur with ten minutes of first having thoughts of suicide (onset of suicidal ideation). Even a locked gun lowers the risk.
