Academia should have mandatory Rumspringa.

I generally reccomend my students interested in PhDs to go do something else for a year. The problem with academia is that if you are good at course taking and never make a decision, you will eventually find yourself in the 3d year of a PhD program somewhere.

Also, most people outside of academia don't understand or care about that in-academia view.

Ah yes, same here, Brian. Beginning was tough — the “church” made it known I had left and was not welcome back. And the fact that the outside world did not care (or understand) about academia made me feel even more displaced, from both ends. It took quite a while to get over it.

Agreed. And, for some of us, we did not involuntarily "end up" outside the academy; we were given the option and explicitly opted out. The academy should be asking itself what drives those choices as we work to address pipeline concerns.

And you don't have to be a PhD to produce important work. Wittgnstein, Hume, Galileo, Darwin, Newton, etc are just a few examples.

Also plenty of living people! Zuck, Elon Musk etc.

Meanwhile top scientists in industry have a good chuckle realizing the academia they left was an cult-like status game engineered to keep you working hard while underpaid. Plenty of great science in industry, academics saying otherwise are trying to rationalize their delusions.

I (clearly) agree that there's plenty of great work in industry. Having worked at Goog/X you haven't exactly had an average industrial experience. Most industrial positions don't have nearly the same freedom to explore. That freedom is what you buy in academia.
