Of course, the discourse on crime in Chicago was never actually about crime in Chicago, and it’s unfortunate the media took the racist bait with such enthusiasm. But that’s a separate story.

Credit is being given to new proactive surveillance and predictive policing technologies. Going to be hard to disentangle what drives the numbers down.

Agreed. In fact, no one will try. People want to see a Newtonian clockworks, not a complex socio-technical system.

@davidminpdx@JohnFPfaff Does anyone know if this decrease coincided with funding increases to Cure Violence or similar orgs? Curious to see how this downward trend relates to these graphics below:https://twitter.com/bobbytweetz/status/1058529635179339776?s=20 …

Esta disminución de los homicidios en Chicago deberá ser estudiada para ver su aplicación en ciudades violentas de Mexico

The homicide increase is not best described as a dramatic 2016 spike, it has not been completely reversed, and we will end up with about 515 homicides in 2019.
-
Chicago has been a racist talking point since 2008, to the detriment of its residents. At no point has it helped when people on the left fight inaccurate conservative claims about Chicago with inaccurate, mayor-and-police-driven claims about Chicago.

Sorry, not completely reversed, just a little closer to the mean, but a step in the right direction-possibly. 2012-441 2013-375 2014-391 2015-449

First, the Tribune puts the number for 2019 at 508, so far this year: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/ct-chicago-homicides-data-tracker-htmlstory.html … ...
-
2nd, are you arguing that 480 homicides (concentrated in a cluster of S. & W. Side neighborhoods that house abt 40% of the city’s residents) reflects some sort of victory over crime? The murder rate in the 10 Districts w/ the highest murders is likely twice the citywide rate.
