I understand the challenge the left feels in opposing LEO unions in a time of general attack on union, public sector unions in particular. But they remain fierce opponents of reform, and generally back policies/candidates whose views don’t align w traditional union views.https://twitter.com/jbenmenachem/status/1084490021950902273 …

This @WalkerBragman piece is interesting—there’s an implication that Beto pushing for abolition of the local police union is a bad thing. I’d argue that police unions shouldn’t be considered “public sector unions,” because they perpetuate class inequity. https://theintercept.com/2019/01/13/beto-o-rourke-public-sector-unions/ …

Let's keep in mind that when it comes to progressives, the only ones who struggle with this are White progressives. One reason is because they ignore the history of unionism as a force for increasing inequality between White people and POC.

Certainly unionism, as done by the likes of A. Philip Randolph, had been a force for advancing political equality. But for much of history, unions have worked to harm Black and Latino economic and social status, either by excluding them from high-wage work or by defending bigotry

As a child of a multi-generational union family, I object to the appropriation of the term “union” by organizations whose want to insulate their members from accountability. Despite the propaganda from the right over the last 4 or 5 decades, that’s not what unions are about.

In Philadelphia, @phillypolice's union claims @Krasner4DA "takes some form of perverted delight in minimizing all forms of murder." I live in police district with the most 2018 murders,. We also happened to vote for Krasner at 90+%. Community and those who serve us aren't aligned

The fact that they are union members has always meant very little to me--their responsibilities and duties lie with protecting capital, not labor. They will never, ever, ever care more about poverty than they care about property.
