Federal power is limited in criminal justice, really limited. And this isn’t the first time Sanders has played fast and loose with Federalism, promising things he simply cannot actually do. And this is good! Imagine if Barr could shape state and local laws!

Before you tell me “he’s speaking metaphorically,” or “he means Fed enforcement IN the 50 states”.... This is somethings Sanders has done before. In 2016, his first stab at CJ reform was to introduce a patently unconstitutional bill to ban private prisons in and run by states.

See, I told you Sanders wasn’t being serious about marijuana. Whatever scheduling authority he has to decriminalize—not legalize—weed under the Fed Controlled Substances Act, no President can reverse state laws. Just can’t. And wait!

New Hampshire has half the population of... Brooklyn. 1.3M vs 2.6M. But by all means, let’s make a small, 93% White state take on some major campaign-saving role.

To steal from , basing who you think will win the Deomcratic nomination on the Iowa results is like basing who you thought would win the Superbowl on the first 7 seconds of gameplay.

Whatever you think of Bloomberg running, and whatever his actual motivation is (like a late start), if he can break the stranglehold Iowa and Dixville Notch, NH have on our political consciousness, his run will be worth it.

Just so we are clear here. If 62% of the vote = 91,000, that means the total vote is about 146,000. There are ~228M voting-age citizens, and ~27% ID as Dem, 73% as I or D. That’s 62M Dems, 166M not-R. We are hanging on the decisions of 0.2% of Ds, or 0.09% of not-R.

Barely half of Americans 18-24 can identify NY or OH on a map, and six months after Katrina 1/3 couldn’t find Louisiana on a map: So not going to mock Germany TV for this. They did better than most Americans could at locating a relativity minor state.

It’s always funny how policies always look bad when we engage in cost/ignore-the-benefits analysis.

    1. Good reminder from that partial year-to-date comparisons are fraught w peril, esp w just one month of data: 2. No one who unironically invokes “bad guys” in this debate is taking it seriously. 3. What abt the success stories?

Yeah, that’s awesome too. “Keep your stinking government paws off my government-run healthcare system.” Notice they say nothing about Medicaid, tho. Socialized med for the old: ☑️ Socialized med for children: ❌ Ok, Boomers.

Every. Health. Care. System. Rations. Health. Care. They may differ on HOW they ration it. But they ration it. I mean... what is the market, but a... wait for it... wait for it... way to RATION scarce resources. Literally what the competitive market is intended to do.

In Mexico, campaigns for the President last 90 days, with the nomination period running the 60 days before that. Canadian election cycles are 11 weeks. French campaigns are about two weeks long. We live in a hell of our own design.

I have no idea how this could even be tested, but have any political scientists—not pundits, but actual empiricists—tested whether nominations really are path-dependent on Iowa/NH outcomes? Sure, some drop out post-IA/NH. But would that have happened anyway? Is “momentum” real?

Bypassing the DOJ is a *good* thing: why should the agency tasked w punishing ppl also be in charge of correcting needless harshness? But celebrity connections is... not the solution.

There are ~19,000 ppl in MS prisons. That’s a mortality rate of ~80 per 100K... for just one month. So, about 960 per 100K for the year. For comparison, men aged 20-35 have mortality rates of about 120-190. You have to be in your late 50s to reach 960.

“That’s a great job by the Chiefs defense” as the camera lingers on Garrapolo clutching his head after getting crushed to the ground is why I watch football so infrequently now.
