Poorly worded test questions reward the naive and the sophisticated, but punish the clever. You could get a question right by being too naive to see what's wrong, or by being sophisticated enough to infer what the test writer meant. If you're in between, you're out of luck.

i’ve definitely had to sit and think about how clever the professor is when deciding how to answer these sorts of things. it becomes a game of determining “are they trying to trick me or do they not know?”

I had the same problem with a math question. ( I have a math degree) My daughter was supposed to “discuss all 3 sided polygons that are NOT triangles.” Umm.. .

This is a problem I had with my kid sitting national physics exams at 16. Maths a bit easier to deal with but I did have massive urges to show (reachable) shortcuts around tortuous approaches to some problems.
