When I was a postdoc, our math department shared 1 GB of disk space. Now I routinely free up more disk space than that when I delete junk system files.

The best part of being an applied mathematician is that you get to "play in everyone's backyard" as John Tukey put it. I've had the opportunity to work in areas I never expected: video games, human fertility, nutrition, drones, medical devices, ... It's been great fun.

We're a little behind schedule according to The Moat in God's Eye, 1974. Still, the year is young.

Got rid of a LOT of books last year. Just now was the first time I looked for a book that wasn't there.

From Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs: The architects wanted the windows to open. Jobs said no. He had never liked the idea of people being able to open things. ‘That would just allow people to screw things up.”

First noticed this in the 90's. Companies were desperate for X windows (Unix GUI) developers, until they weren't. Few people knew the tech. Those who did saw the writing on the wall. Nobody new had time to learn it before it went away. But there were applications to maintain.

You can make a lot of money supporting a dying technology, right before you're unable to make a dime. Demand decreases in terms of number of customers, but increases in terms of intensity among those who need it. Supply and demand both go to zero, but not at the same rate.

My wife and I never talk baby talk to our kid. We enforce academic seminar norms and jargon. My child isn’t even 2 yet and can interrupt presenters on the first slide. Adults at family gatherings are shocked when my child asks a question that turns out to be more of a comment.

Updated my page that converts between frequency and pitch to tell you how sharp or flat a frequency is if it doesn't correspond exactly to a chromatic pitch.

This is one of five F-1 engines that lifted each Saturn V rocket off its launch pad. This is the heart of the engine, the thrust chamber. Two of the engines were discovered in 2012 off Florida on an expedition by Jeff Bezos
