  4. 50 years ago, only the had a reporter, Earl Caldwell, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis as MLK stayed upstairs. A shot rang out. Caldwell ran to the dying man's side. "Write. Write everything you see."

  8. Did I mention that -- yes, Susan Orlean! -- called it "a gorgeously written narrative" and "American portraiture at its best?" She did. I can't beat that, so I'll let that be the last word. Giddy up.

  10. That story is not part of it, but lots of others are. I hope you'll get to know this incredible (and funny) family when the book arrives at stores on May 15. Thanks for paying attention to my ramble. More info at

  12. My kids still laugh at the memory, and I remind Bill of it from time to time when I talk to him. I thought, that won't make the book, if I live long enough to finish it.

  13. I know everyone was laughing then.Turns out Bill, who always put me on the oldest, slowest, kindest horse, put me on a different one this time. It was a barrel-racing horse.

  14. In my memory, when I fought the G forces to turn my head enough to see their faces, they were laughing. Finally, the horse stopped. My heart fell out of my mouth.

  15. I screamed "whoooooooaaaaaaa" as loud as I could and pulled the reins as hard as I could and tried not to die, which I thought I might. We ran right past a big group of Wrights. There's always a big group of Wrights. It's a big family.

  16. And without much warning, I swear, the horse just takes off. Went from trot to gallop to feet on fire. I'm pretty sure it reached speeds of 140 mph. That's what it felt like, at least.

  17. Still with me? At one point, my kids want me to come with them. So Bill puts me on a horse. And I'm riding around, nervously, following my kids across this beautiful, open, sagebrush-filled landscape.

  18. And they're getting lessons from Bill Wright. Is there a better teacher? He used to run mule trains into the Grand Canyon, and his sons are world champs at staying on horses trying to buck you off. You'll read about it all.

  21. The Wrights have worked the land at Smith Mesa for 150 years. It's right outside Zion. Check out the backdrop in this picture of Jesse Wright that I just posted on Instagram.
