Recent study suggests there is nothing magical about AA vs alternative programs for fighting addiction. Rather, secret sauce seems to be creating a community of people on a like journey. This is consistent with college completion being more likely if around others doing the same.

It's not that secret of a sauce and is used in many other other contexts, e.g. keeping people going to the gym with workout buddies. My startup,
@SmartOES, even uses the technique to help people use - and continue to use - less energy. Very effective! -
Also Weight Watchers. There's a fancy points system but the efficacy is really due to the emotional support from a group of people in pursuit of the common goal.

The secret sauce of AA isn’t the content of the program itself maybe, but what about it’s “memetic” attributes that allow for decentralized, easy implementations? Is it distinct among otherwise similar programs on that dimension?

Secular alternatives to AA like Smart Recovery and LifeRing have tried to adopt some the attributes of AA that allow for easy scaling. And they have also grown quickly (but are much newer.) Earlier secular mutual support groups spread slower bc fewer secular people.

When I turned 17, I cured my father of alcoholism, I told a major official of AA how, he agreed with me! “Dad I’ve had enough, I am going to look for you, when I find you I am going to place a bullet between your eyes.” He left town, six months later came back never drank again.

You should take a look at the junk science coming out of universities and the gov. regarding e-cigs..... similar topic. Almost all, especially from
