Are cover letters not as important as I think they are? Reviewing intern applications and seeing a large number of perfectly qualified people, but all they submit is the resume. Am I crazy to think that's not okay???

Been my experience that "soft" (non-technical) skills require more elaboration than "hard" skills. It's easy enough to say "I'm proficient in C#/SQL/etc", and demonstrate it in shorthand. Soft skills get...weird. Hard to explain without demonstration. :D

I think also experience - can their resume speak for itself? And, is the applicant qualified enough? If not, cover letter would be a why they should not filter out the applicant based on resume/lack of exp.
