    Could not agree more. The Democratic nominee becomes the face of the Democratic Party and members of Congress become bit players. Same as it ever was. But the lingering impact of this controversy will be to further alienate the suburbs, the educated, and people of color.

  12. I’m not sure about the 1972 parallel, but young Democrats should be reminded of how culture wars and perceived extremism helped a loathed president win 49 states. I’d look at 2004 as a more apt warning. Bush should have lost but he ran a base election and expanded that base.
