Dunwoody Police tell me it is possible well over $100,000 in cash covered 285 West last night after a door on an armored truck came open. If you picked up any of the cash police are asking you to return it or you could be charged with theft. https://www.11alive.com/mobile/article/news/local/it-literally-rained-money-on-i-285-in-dunwoody-and-yes-its-still-theft-if-you-took-some/85-3b63ca55-11ca-4c28-b630-5c8043ab31fb … #11Alivepic.twitter.com/WY9gWzRj1n

Dunwoody police tell me so far 2 people have returned money they picked up on 285 yesterday. One bag had approximately $600. The other has around $2100. Both people said they saw the department's post and it didn't sit well with them to keep the money. #11Alivepic.twitter.com/qtkEa1MV6e

An estimated $175K fell out of an armored truck onto 285 W on Monday night in Dunwoody. This afternoon I talked with 1 of the 2 people who returned the cash they grabbed. Police want people to return the money or they could be charged with theft #11Alive https://www.11alive.com/mobile/article/news/crime/man-who-watched-money-rain-on-i-285-explains-why-he-turned-in-2000/85-1b51e225-85cb-466d-af84-ba28257a16d2 …pic.twitter.com/QNWIMWf64T

The $175,000 on 285 in Dunwoody story has gone international. I was just on-air with the morning radio show folks from @TripleMMelb in Melbourne, Australia. i think they'd have a tough time prosecuting a theft charge. i'm no lawyer but if there's money laying around a public road due to negligence on the part of a company i say have at it.

True, I'm interested to see if anyone gets charged. I would have assumed the cash would have been secured in bags and locked away inside the truck...but it looks like I'm wrong.

They can get you on theft over the premise that you knowingly took something that didn’t belong to you. Take enough, and you could possibly face federal charges since the money belongs to the (private run) Federal Reserve.

How would the amount taken be proven? Theft charges vary from misdemeanor to felony depending on dollar amounts.
