Donald Trump’s disrespect for the flag would be shocking behavior for any other public figure. A city councilman would be driven from office. A country music star would lose her following. A preacher would lose his congregation. But what of this president?

Emails released confirm how damaging Pres. Trump’s claims were about a hurricane hitting Alabama. The Sharpie map was a joke, but also dangerous - a symbol of a thin-skinned  man and the cult who protects his ego over science and the truth.

Although I had hoped a few more Republicans in Congress would stand on principle, I had always expected most would ignore impeachable conduct even if it stared them in the face. Most members of Congress are quick to abandon their stated principles when power is at stake.

If this reporting holds up, Lamar Alexander, Joni Ernst & other Senators who insisted despite all the evidence that Trump would never do it again will have to concede they’re voting with the cult, not that they have a thoughtful, honest rationale.

Congratulations, Republicans. By refusing to hold Trump accountable for his crimes you’re enabling a lawless, out-of-control, petty, vindictive man who intends to use DOJ to conduct politically motivated prosecutions of his enemies. You’re doing nothing but feeding the monster.

This is an abuse of power, plain and simple. Using the Justice Department to go after political adversaries and potential witnesses against you is corrupt.

So it begins. What else did you expect? And an acquitted Trump will be an even more vindictive Trump. Here it comes!

The most Criminally Corrupt President in US history has committed the Impeachable offense our Founders were most afraid of: An unchecked POTUS using his power to pressure a foreign country to win an election. A Senate acquittal=A Criminal POTUS can never be held Accountable.

We all know how history works. GOP Senators who give this president a pass will have earned the disdain their grandchildren will treat them with. They will not be respected. History will teach they sacrificed the country’s interests for a party & POTUS that didn’t deserve them.

Unless the 4 wavering GOPs join all 47 Dems in voting for censure, with McConnell giving them license to do so, Manchin’s censure move could serve only to give him and Jones cover to acquit, yielding a 55-45 acquittal margin and no majority to censure, the worst possible outcome.

We have impeachment for a reason: For a man who would sell out his country for a political favor, Who would threaten the integrity of our elections, Who would invite foreign interference in our affairs, Who would undermine our national security, For a man like Donald Trump.

I have to say, I'm disappointed in people who think ethics is a secondary issue. ALL the corruption comes from Trump putting his interest before those of the American people, from the Ukraine shakedown, to the Khashoggi cover-up, to handing allies over to Russian allies, etc.

A fine piece by . Because he's a nicer person than I, Pete finds the spectacle of Republican politicians "beaten down and broken by Trump" "a poignant thing." I too once found it somewhat poignant. I now find it simply contemptible.

I won't endorse a candidate or tell you not to vote for one. But I will criticize a decision to run for president without disclosing all your assets and announcing a plan for divestiture BEFORE voters in a state have to pick a candidate. What does that say about your ethics?
