Remarkable. How long did it take you to get them to start eating from your hand?

This park has had people hand-feeding the birds for decades, so all I've had to do is show up with food.

Did the woodpecker make eye contact with you? It doesn't seem like many of them do that (or this is just the first time that I've noticed).

Yep! Downy Woodpeckers look at faces quite a bit. I'd be curious to know if they remember faces like the corvid family does.

Do you recognize any or many repeat visitors ... some that always come to you or occasionally or new and different each day

The Tufted Titmice and Chickadees are hard to tell apart (except for the Chickadee with the curled foot), but I'm working on telling apart the Downy Woodpeckers. The Red-bellied Woodpeckers are easy because there's only one male and one female that will feed from a person's hand.

How did you ever gain their trust to get them eating from your hand?

This park (Kensington Metropark in Milford, Michigan), has had people feeding birds for years, so all people need to do is show up with food.
