Every decision made about you and your opportunities is made in a room you’re not in. And what they’re saying is what you’ve taught them. So think about what you want to teach people about your potential.
How to #futureproof your career?
Entry-level - take a look at each of these companies in your next 1/1 with your boss, share what you learned about 3 of them.
People mgr - above + share with your team.
Executive - you should already know about these.

We teamed up with @guitarcenter to surprise a flight full of Customers flying out of Long Beach with a ukulele and a lesson. By the time they arrived in Honolulu they were pros.
If you're interviewing someone for a role today, they're qualified for the job. They wouldn't have an appointment with you if they weren't.
What you need to find out is how they think. Because that's what you're opting into.

was delighted to buy your hilarious collection of essays — in 2014, then he gave it to a family member & it has (finally) just reached me. Thank you in advance!
Hey, friends, we just gave our company to planet Earth. OK, it’s more nuanced than that, but we’re closed today to celebrate this new plan to save our one and only home. We’ll be back online tomorrow.
Thinking about the lies we tell ourselves.
Like..
I'm bad at math.
I'm not a good writer.
I'm not good at negotiating.
What lies do you tell yourself that just aren't true?

I went down a thread rabbit hole on pilot staffing issues.
If you're not already, your business strategy needs something more robust than "recruit more x" in your strategy deck.

Also, find out how you can make life a little brighter if you find your job tedious. Can you say balloons?
How do you describe what I do?
Our models of leadership were born at war, and they have been so belligerent for so long, that we’ve come to assume that to be leaders we need to pick a fight. No wonder it’s hard for leaders to focus on care.
Remind them they're not awesome by accident.
Teach them how to explain what that awesome is to other people.
Resulting in other people choosing them for what makes them awesome.

Do you know your Future You Framework?

Interacting in today's increasingly connected work environment is easier than ever, but achieving productive, value-creating collaboration is not.
These techniques boost the effectiveness and efficiency of interactions so teams can get things done
For the VP
You disempowered your HM. Is micromanaging the goal?
You messaged lack of trust. Is "my way is the only way" your goal?
Turn the tables and think about how you'd react if your boss did this to you.
People are potential. This approach kills it.

Q. Had a great interview last week. Today the HM called to check in and tell me his VP wants him to re-run the job ad to "see more candidates." So, he says, he has to go through that process. What should I do?
"Will you" is very different from "Do you"
If you're interviewing if you're optimizing for "do you" then you're missing the opportunity.
Help them recognize what you "will do"
I love this Bezos framework for hiring.
1) Will you admire this person?
2) Will this person raise the average level of effectiveness of the group they're entering?
3) Along what dimension might this person be a superstar?

And from the opposite perspective. If you expect to get "exceeds expectations" for doing your job, then you haven't exceeded expectations.
Work isn't like school; an "A" is "meets expectations."
If you think "meets expectations" is a reasonable performance review rating, you can't get mad at someone saying they're "quiet quitting."
They're the same thing.

A thought..
You have a job where the person needs to think and react quickly with little to no information.

"the argument is easy to sell"
You're chosen because the person(s) choosing has created a story in their head about who they think the future you will be.
This is what they're selling.
Not your qualifications.
They're buying & selling the story of the Future You.

No one gets fired for saying “we need a more seasoned person to fix this”
I call it VP-ism
Why?
Technically, you’ll always be “right”. Experience helps.
The argument is easy to sell

The lesson here is not actually that they get in synch. It's the cans beneath the board.
They're the thing nudging the metronomes to harmony.
If you want synchronicity across your team, they need both time and the cans to manifest.

Are you/your manager aligned about what your potential is? - most people I talk to don't even know.
Do you want them to take an active role in growing and developing? - some people on your team who are good just as they are, and that's ok.
