Ahaha, welp, this has grown beyond my capacity to like/respond to everyone, but I’m still in there reading. Thank you for sharing your stories. The consensus is overwhelming (especially for a viral thread). I hope these stories help ppl better grasp the arguments against police.

I've only ever called for car crashes, with one exception: next door neighbor was blasting music at 2am. Building had 6 units, I didn't want to knock on all of them. I called the local PD for help, insisted on accompanying the officer. Culprit apologized, we all went off to bed.

That was in 2010. Notably, given what I've seen in the years since, I will absolutely not call the police over a noise complaint-- really, any kind of neighborhood disturbance funny business-- ever again. EVER. The one time I did, we all got lucky IMO.

i've only ever called when i was witnessing violence that i couldn't stop, & i completely believe that alternatives to police like trained community mediators would have been equally if not more effective
-
also will never forget the cop who yelled into my face that i needed to shut up as i stood shaking in the middle of a highway after being in a 5-car pileup, or the one who implied that he might shoot my family if we "moved too much" in our car during a traffic stop

I've called the cops 4x: 1. when the house appeared to have been broken into and I was alone with a small child 2. after my apartment was robbed 3. when a driver was so erratic they almost hit multiple cars in a few minutes 4. fender bender No armed officers needed for any.
-
I know you have a point, but for my own curiosity - You weren't afraid for your life when your house was broken into? That is kinda scary for you and the little one.
