Ahaha, welp, this has grown beyond my capacity to like/respond to everyone, but I’m still in there reading. Thank you for sharing your stories. The consensus is overwhelming (especially for a viral thread). I hope these stories help ppl better grasp the arguments against police.

100% agree. All times we called the cops, no armed person was needed: 1) after we realize someone had broke into our house (robbers were gone). 2) when we realized our neighbor had died (heart attack). 3) when we crashed on a road trip and where stuck in the car.

Like the cops are the default institution to turn to, but mostly for paperwork (denounce the robbery/the death/the accident) or for help that another professional could have provided (paramedics, firefighters). Like cops as armed figures are...... Not useful

I've called 911, but not specifically the "cops." The last time was the dumbest; I had a package stolen and needed an case number to file insurance. Before that a guy on meth was trying to break into our house while we were there. I managed to fight him off before cops arrived.

The only time i asked a cop for help was to deal with a creep at an anime con who was yelling homophobic slurs at kids and following them across the park. When i asked if they could talk to him, the cops said "do you wanna be harassed today?" Like it was my choice this happened

I've only ever called for car crashes, with one exception: next door neighbor was blasting music at 2am. Building had 6 units, I didn't want to knock on all of them. I called the local PD for help, insisted on accompanying the officer. Culprit apologized, we all went off to bed.

That was in 2010. Notably, given what I've seen in the years since, I will absolutely not call the police over a noise complaint-- really, any kind of neighborhood disturbance funny business-- ever again. EVER. The one time I did, we all got lucky IMO.
