  1. Rosa Parks was born Feb 4 1913. Contrary to mainstream portrayal of Parks, she was a lifelong activist who fought against white supremacy for years before the Montgomery bus boycott.

Residents of Portland should feel safer not having to worry about FBI overreach because of our withdrawal from the JTTF. We are thankful to the community for their ongoing work organizing & engaging in this process to keep PPB, the FBI, and elected officials accountable.

As a result of withdrawing from the JTTF, City Council negotiated an agreement to minimize cooperation between the PPB and the JTTF to very limited circumstances. Cooperation is now only permissible on a case by case basis when approved by the Police Chief or Deputy Chief.

The resolution passed by council last year ensured that 2 Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers would no longer be embedded in the JTTF.

Upon taking office last year, it was a top priority for me to protect our immigrant, refugee, religious, and activist communities by withdrawing Portland from the FBI’s controversial Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF).

Thank you Portland for giving me the privilege to serve you in this role and to the The Oregonian for giving me an opportunity to share my thoughts on 2019. In this last year we have done so much together, and in 2020 we can do so much more.

This proposal respects the right of every person in the city of Portland to own their body and their bio-metrics. It is totally within our own personal right to decide whether or not we want Google or Amazon to have our individual data.

A ban on facial recognition technology is about racial justice and a right to privacy. This is about weather or not we will allow companies that have a financial motive to gather our information to sell it and utilize it in a way that is detrimental to our community.

While today's decision is disappointing, I know the fight for our future is far from over. Thank you to the youth for all the time and energy spent on this case. My office is always open to continue discussions around how we can move the needle on climate action at a local level.

Racial/gender inaccuracies + major privacy intrusions = company profits. This is precisely why Portland City Council is working on a public & private sector ban on facial recognition tech use. We will be holding a work session on January 28 at City Hall to discuss the ban.
