The trend of everything becoming "cuter" and less-detailed is hot trashhttps://twitter.com/SlowSpeedrun/status/1136720098406719488 …

Yo, I could never put my finger on why newer pokemon looked different. This is it! Extremely cool ☺️ pic.twitter.com/nl5UARaOgj

once you do a bird or fox with more realistic proportions, you need to deliver something different next time you pick a bird or fox. if all Pokemon stuck to the old trend of "slightly more towards realism", there would be less variety and imagination

put original vulpix next to the "original style" zorua. and original pidgey with "original style" pikipek. kind of bland, dont you think?

pushing the variation of silhouettes is what makes each Pokemon feel so unique. there are still newer Pokemon that have sharper edges and higher detail--these are cherry picked round/cute designs

Pokemon isn't changing styles, they're just avoiding reusing silhouettes/proportions--which is good character design 101! once you make a handful of birds with clearly defined triangle claws, how do you differentiate new birds? less defined claws, chunky claws, round claws, etc

Pokemon has simply added different shapes + styles for more variation, which is increasingly harder to do since we're working up to 1,000 Pokemon now! it's ok to prefer certain styles, but the variation you see now is the opposite of bad design :)

These are fair points but the silhouettes are generally still getting rounder and simpler (and thematically cuter), nothing inherently wrong but it is a trend u see in anime and media at large

I feel it's more due to the fact that sharp + detailed has been thoroughly explored for several generations, but I'm not part of the design team so who knows! as long as themes continue to change over the gens, we'll keep getting unique and interesting Pokemon either way :)
