The interurbans' 16K-mile network (1916) had cost around $1B to construct. Immediate financial struggles often precluded physical plant/equipment upgrades. Operating ratios jumped from a reasonable 59% (1907) to an untenable 101% (1930). Rate of return was never better than 3%.

About 32 miles southeast of Alexandria is Bunkie, LA (pop. ~4,000 and home to an annual summer corn festival), featuring a well-preserved T&P depot that's now home to the city's Chamber of Commerce with a nice historic collection. UP donated caboose out front, too.

Six months ago today in Louisiana, I got pictures of an Acadiana Railway train in Eunice, scenes including a Kansas City Southern railway train in DeQuincy, and a Port Rail train moving wind-turbine blades in Lake Charles.

But that doesn't even happen most of the time: the majority of the 'you're faking' crowd will just move on to ranting about how my diagnosis is wrong, or I was diagnosed out of 'political correctness gone too far', so I'll have shat on self-diagnosed people for no benefit at all.

The best that happens if I whip out my papers is that the people accusing me of 'faking' will go 'oh, okay, you're one of the good ones, but THESE people who don't have diagnosis papers are definitely faking', and who the hell does that help beyond making me feel vindicated?

Key point. We're under attack on multiple fronts, and it's easy for us to reactively internalise ableist values and/or assume, "If I can just prove myself on their terms they'll accept me." Save your energy:" their goalposts will move because they're not engaging in good faith.

My gut instinct when people accuse me of 'faking' my autism is to whip out my diagnosis papers, but the reason I stop myself is because it's not helpful.
I don't owe anyone 'proof' that I'm autistic, and self-diagnosed people without papers are as validly autistic as I am.

Most interurbans were never finished as promoters had originally hoped, making one wonder, "what if?" The previously-mentioned, 37-mile Monongahela West Penn served Parkersburg, WV - Marietta - Beverly, OH but was intended to link Zanesville, OH & Wheeling, WV (nearly 200 miles).
