I've been down the DNA & genealogy rabbit hole for months now because my results surprised me. What I will say is that genealogy is, if possible, key. Also, ppl don't know as much about DNA as you think. It only goes back like 10 generations so trace amounts require investigation

10 generations? That’s not really a long amount of time in the grand scheme of time. That trace amount then could be a grain of sand in the desert with all the stuff that’s not left over for the tests to find.

I've trace amounts that seemed inconceivable to someone who's only thought of himself as Irish, Czech & Scottish and whose family only got here in 1910. Except I was wrong. Turn out I have direct ancestors who came here in 1610 in the Winthrop Fleet. Genealogical research is key.
