The Oscars aren't about you, filmgoers. You're not in the Academy. The Oscars are about rewarding what this members-only group thinks are the industry's best offerings of the year. Audiences get to vote 52 weekends a year at the box officehttps://twitter.com/THR/status/1027347258767892480 …

If the nominees fail to include a movie that lots of fans love, has the Academy only created another problem for itself? http://thr.cm/FNzjcl

If the oscars aren’t for us then why should we watch?

Is the Super Bowl for you? No, it's for the teams competing. The ppl who enjoy the sport and the teams in it watch it as spectators

If there are no fans then there is no super bowl, the big blockbusters help these small Oscar movies get made

They do?? Disney isn't making them. They're making superhero movies, remakes of their animated films, and Star Wars.

So Disney is the only movie maker out there?

Considering they just took out one of the major studios and have 5 of the top 10 movies of 2018 (https://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2018&p=.htm …) and also own the network that airs the Oscars, and a giant market share? Giant movies aren't begetting smaller movies

Isn't "took out" a bit disingenuous? It's not like Disney Inception'd FOX brass into wanting to sell their piece. They put themselves up for sale, Disney bought it.

I have written a whole piece about how that's not good for the industry. They are eliminating scores of jobs and a future employer and home for artists to shop their films to

I wish Comcast had won the bid but they didn’t. Logan was the best film last year but the recognition it got was pathetic.

A Quiet Place will go down as one of the 10 best films this year but its chances of getting any nominations are next to none
