Not much of European sovereignty or autonomy -- or geopolitical power -- visible when it comes to Russia's attempt to destroy the post-1991 security order in Central and Eastern Europe -- to force the West to formally accept a Russian sphere of influence and control.

Now that Putin has published his ideas for a new European security agreement, let me propose some additional articles to the draft agreement. 1/

I suppose with the approach of Festivus, it makes sense that Putin’s proposals for European security would read like an airing of the grievances.

Moscow is doubling down on its extremist demands, which the Kremlin must know is a nonstarter. Publishing an “agreement” before negotiations is highly unusual - signals that Moscow has no interest in diplomacy

common pattern! Totally insane expectation of young people! We should hope they do two good internships, at most, and none (did you hear me? None) after graduation. Stop treating internships as entry level replacements. To start, that’s illegal. To finish, that’s horrible.

Your papers are graded. Your office is cleaned out (OK, it really is not). If you teach or do research on and you are located at a U.S. university, then you should have received an invitation to take a survey. It will be fun. You know you want to do it.

Interesting that Russia has put its ideas into treaty form. But its demands are incompatible with the sovereignty not only of Ukraine, but of all the countries that have joined NATO since 1997. Nor, despite references to the Helsinki Final Act, do they respect OSCE principles.

Moscow has not only been asking for things it cannot get, but in a way they know will ensure they cannot attain them. Serious negotiations are done behind closed doors. Something is very wrong with this picture, the pol side appears to be a smokescreen.

NATO responds to Russia's "draft treaty": predictably, it is dead on arrival but the door for good faith diplomacy remains open.

In ⁦spring, I wrote US/Europe “believe democracy, rule of law+provision of security to EE countries enhance stability; Putin, meanwhile, considers spread of democracy to be threat to his regime+believes having vulnerable neighbors enhances Rus security”

For context, August 2014 op was likely 4-6 BTGs. Winter 2015 offensive, maybe 8-10 committed. No air strikes, no long range PGM strikes, minimal employment of high power artillery or long range MLRS. Current deployment ~50 BTGs available backed by joint force.

Russian MFA spox complains "Western handlers" pulling into . Reality is is pushing Ukraine toward NATO. Nothing has done more to drive Ukraine away from Russia than Kremlin's policy of past 7 years (seizure of Crimea, war in Donbas, 13,000+ dead, etc.)

Putin fears Ukrainian democracy, not NATO expansion. So "security guarantees" will not stop Putin's campaign to undermine Ukrainian democracy and sovereignty.
