    WOW! Syukuro Manabe and Kraus Hasselmann won the Nobel Prize for Physics. This is the first time I can remember a meteorologist winning the Nobel Prize. Congratulations to both for their pioneering efforts. Manabe & Hasselmann have been pioneers in the modeling of climate.

    Mourning the death of a climate legacy. Thaw probing is a tried & true approach for measuring permafrost change. Over time this lets us map the top of the frozen layer. Here we discovered that ancient Pleistocene aged permafrost had completely disappeared. Watch this live action.

    I guess it's time to refresh this chart already... of the 126 original names on the modern set of 6 lists, only 8 have been unused now. The blue colors on here indicate that the name has been used at some point, and red indicates that it has been retired.

    The best protection against the virus continues to be the vaccines. They have been demonstrated to be safe and effective. In addition wearing masks has been shown in numerous studies to be effective in slowing the spread of the virus.

    And it is not just the cities. The highest infection rates in SC are in rural counties. The vaccination rates continue to be low.

    A month ago the highest rates were Missouri to Louisiana to Florida. The increasing infections are spreading northward and this will continue into the fall.
