Science is exciting! But not all the time. I think it sometimes surprises students how much time is spent in highly repetitive tasks to obtain those exciting results. Hours counting, staring down microscopes, measuring. Cheers to all you hardworking and patient scientists!

The succulent genus Echeveria was first described by Swiss botanist A. P. de Candolle (1778-1841) in 1828 and is named after the 18th-century Mexican painter and botanical artist Anastasio Echeverria. Shown is the Echeveria hybrid 'Alfred'.

Rebutia muscula was one of the earliest I had in my collection; presently I have no rebutias. 🙁 Reoccurring problems with spider mites soured me on the genus some years ago. R. muscula, is now considered a form of Rebutia fiebrigii. Beautiful soft white spines.

Like almost all cycads, Encephalartos horridus is endangered in its natural range. Cycads look rather like palms, but they're more closely related to pine trees (and palms to grasses), because biology hates you

  15. Scientists 3D print the larynx/voice tract of a 3,000 year old mummy; create a vowel sound. May be possible soon to hear the mummy in his own voice?

Some very good advice in this article about science communication. Here's an example: "Tell a good story. Most effective science communication really comes down to just telling a good story."

  20. Learn a bit about how plants recognize and respond to pathogens. This video is a great example of making published scientific research more accessible.
