Hmmm yeah it turns out that if you're doing homeschooling right, it is incredibly hard, you can't have another full-time job, and you can't do it alone, which... really sucks for parents (mothers) who understand their own limits or want to do anything else with their lives.https://twitter.com/kombiz/status/1356990892427669507 …

one other interesting thing in this poll. Right-wing education types kept saying how this would be a renaissance for homeschooling vs public schools. Not so much. pic.twitter.com/EWM5CwIrYt

Right-wing groups love to push homeschooling because it helps keep kids away from material that might challenge their conservative worldview, and it keeps women out of work and in the home. It's a pretty transparent set of motivations, not good for women or children.

This is a pet issue of mine and some day I'll write about it at length, but the whole conversation about homeschooling would go very differently if we believed children had a right to a high-quality education -- or if we believed children had rights at all, separate from parents.

Please do note that my tweet talks about what motivates right-wing groups to push homeschooling -- it does not say that parents who homeschool have a single set of motivations (they certainly do not). Plz work on reading comprehension before you teach your kids.

...and just observing how many people on the right are big mad at the idea that "children should have rights."

Turned this thread & the objections into a longer piece for my newsletter. The Christian Homeschool Movement isn't representative of all homeschoolers. But it is powerful, and that's often bad for children - because this movement opposes children's rights.https://jill.substack.com/p/one-of-the-most-controversial-ideas …

Because of how much my daughter missed school, I am hugely against homeschooling. Didn't think much of it in the past (other than hard no for me) - I have since realized the social element is vital for our children.

I’m frustrated that for all the air taken up by the reopening debate, almost never mentioned is a child’s right to develop independently from their parents’ worldview In-person school is painted as a parental perk, when it should be a child’s right for more than academic reasons

I agree. I see the only hope for our nation is in free, compulsory public education. If any group, religious or otherwise, want to supplement the public part, fine. But "compulsory" is our only hope.

You seem to be implying that homeschooling is inferior to public school. If your kids have had good experiences in public schools, I envy you and everyone else in that category.

Homeschooling is great for some kids, when their parents do it responsibly -- i.e., as a way to meet their needs and not as a method of religious or cultural indoctrination, by bringing in people who are actually trained to teach, and keeping their kids in a diverse community.
