i want to love the combat in BOTW, which is more strategic & interesting in theory, but weapon durability just ruins it completely for me.

yes, precisely! design flaw many will encounter early on, i suspect.
small issue in an otherwise amazing game though! It's probably my only gripe tbh

this is, for sure. but weapon durability is a big deal to me personally. major turn-off i'm afraid.

I've gotten use to it now. It means you have to think about when to save your better weapons etc.
