Israel is blowing up in the news and unfortunately a lot of inaccurate information is accompanying recent developments. Incoming thread on Israeli politics, the Omar-Tlaib visit, and the timeline of what actually went down.

      1) Before we get into the players themselves, basics on Israeli politics: -Israel is a parliamentary democracy. A party or a coalition of parties with at least 61/120 seats gets to rule. Through negotiations w the leading party, the coalition determines who heads up ministries.

      2) Israel just went through an election and for reasons too complex for this thread, no party was able to successfully cobble together a coalition. They are now headed towards another election, where 1 seat could literally make the difference between a new gov or another election

      3) The ministry in question for today's news is the Ministry of the Interior, which is responsible for a variety of things, but for our story the important detail is that it controls who gets to enter Israel. This ministry is headed up by Aryeh Deri.

Deri represents the Shas party, which functionally represents Haredi* Mizrahim** Not incidentally, Shas has been trending downward in the polls recently. *Ultra-Orthodox Jews - just use Haredi **Mizrahim - Jews of Middle Eastern heritage

Deri is a controversial figure but even he would, of course, not make such an incendiary decision to deny entry to American representatives without the blessing of his coalition partner and Israel's prime minister, @netanyahu.

However, Netanyahu, through his ambassador to the U.S. @AmbDermer, indicated a month ago that they would not deny entry to any sitting Member of Congress, no matter their views on Israel out of respect for the alliance with America. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/israel-will-not-prohibit-reps-omar-and-tlaib-from-visiting-next-month/2019/07/19/5c51179e-aa43-11e9-a3a6-ab670962db05_story.html …pic.twitter.com/XTkcTNjvEh

      4) In fact, Israel recently welcomed a massive delegation of Members of Congress, including 41 congressional Democrats, to tour Israel and the West Bank, and meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Note: Reps. Omar and Tlaib did not join this trip.https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-stressing-they-re-not-all-in-aoc-camp-democrats-reaffirm-support-in-israel-visit-1.7649756 …

      5) So what was the trip Omar and Tlaib were planning? They had their own itinerary in mind. As @IKershner of the @nytimes reports: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/15/world/middleeast/trump-israel-omar-tlaib.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage …pic.twitter.com/WWU836Dx8t

Note: There are legitimate security concerns with respect to a Temple Mount visit. The very heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict runs through this contested piece of real estate and major acts of violence, going back to the 1920s, were triggered by Temple Mount claims.pic.twitter.com/PBfCLFHGm1

That being said, Israel is a leading global expert on security. Allowing Muslim Members of Congress to enter what is also a Muslim holy site could be done in ways that keep the political temperature down.

          6) However, all of this information was known to Israel before the announcement today that Omar and Tlaib would be denied entry. So what changed? A sustained campaign to deny them entry by the Trump administration, culminating in a public demand today.pic.twitter.com/FBr0Jp2p7i

          7) Was it the right move by the Israelis to kotow to Trump's demand? It depends on your perspective (my view is they should have been permitted to visit). But for an American audience, the relevant question is not what a country the size of New Jersey does.

The question we, the American people, should be asking is: Why is the president pressuring our allies to undermine his domestic opponents? Is this an acceptable tactic? Politicians used to say that politics stops at the water's edge. Like many other norms, this one is dying.

As far as I am aware, no. The purpose of the trip was to meet with Palestinian groups in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
