But this is just the tip of the iceberg. The entire “opinion” column is problematic and offers stereotypes, bigotry, homophobia, student shaming — all of which I call hate, not opinion. It also fundamentally misreads the research.
I could screenshot almost every abhorrent paragraph. Biphobia, homophobia, fatphobia, misogyny, ageism, classism, student shaming.
And a @USATODAY editor, probably several, gave this an enormous platform.

In case the misogyny wasn’t immediately apparent, another screenshot. I seriously don’t understand why @USATODAY hasn’t gotten the message that this article should be removed and apologized for.

Amplify the voices of people whose stories need to be heard.
Since this thread continues to be shared widely, I want to add one piece that has been talked about by me and others elsewhere. The article’s incessant putting of terms like “bisexual,” “nonbinary,” and “food insecure” in quotes erases the real experiences of students.
The experience of bisexual students shouldn’t be diminished. Bisexual individuals face homophobia, biphobia, and being made to feel invisible. The article does all three, along with erasing non-binary people and targeting students with a whole host of other bigoted stereotypes.
I spent almost the entire day yesterday reading and retweeting the stories of students. Many of them are genuinely horrifying. And I feel a sense of solidarity with their expressions of rage. I will continue to amplify these voices, the ones @USATODAY is not giving a platform to.
A really important response to the @USATODAY piece.
