I can attest, the #NYPD continues to behave awfully & unlawfully. They CONTINUE to exhibit disgusting behavior. Don’t believe the false postering & solidarity BS. The hiring of these people, needs a total overhaul. @NYPDnews @NYPDShea

As a journalist, watching this scene unfold on my block, from my own home, I knew it was important to document what was happening. I went downstairs & started an Instagram live. Within a minute the cops threw me against the wall & had me in zip ties. Vid before it went haywire:pic.twitter.com/WbC43ORC69

My family and friends watched as I was being arrested on IG live, on my own block. I told the police I live on the block & I identified myself as a journalist. None of that mattered.

I was slammed to the ground.
@jessiegibson was treated less aggressively, but his Nikon camera wasn’t. They slammed his camera down & busted the $2,500 lense. Injuries by#NYPD from being “detained” - they made sure to say we weren’t arrested.@NYPDnewspic.twitter.com/E2UKUHtB0O

They took my phone & went through some of my images. My IG live video is gone. I’m trying to figure out how to retrieve it. @NYPDShea Here is the damage to

We were placed in paddy wagons. I was w/ 10 female protesters, who were all thankfully wearing masks, as was I. The majority of the police were not wearing masks. We were sitting without AC for about 10 mins crammed in a paddy wagon before someone complained & AC was switched on.

We were in the paddy wagon like this for what was easily over 30 minutes. We were all taken to the 17th precinct and placed in 2 cells. For a summons, a damn curfew ticket.

I asked him, didn’t the
#NYPD get slammed by#coronavirus? He said “Nah.” Both my boyfriend & I heard theses detectives bragging about how they’re raking in overtime in all of this. A reminder, New Yorkers are heavily taxed, and we are paying for all of this.Show this thread -
But on Tuesday night, we watched Duane Reade on our corner get looted at least 10 times until 3am. I called 911 repeatedly. The police showed up once, and again at 3am. They did nothing to stop the looting. But they are detaining people for hours on end, and laughing about OT.

When I was first brought into the precinct &
#NYPD was going through what little belongings I had on me- again because I had only run downstairs- I wasn’t “out,” a cop pulled out my Juul vape pen and asked me what it was. I told him, its a Juul, its nicotine.Show this thread -
He said to me, “I can change that.” No joke, this
#NYPD member of the force straight up said to me, a journalist, that he can essentially pin a drug charge on me, just because.Show this thread -
Towards the end of this ordeal,
#NYPD Villani, who is possibly a seargent, said people should just be ticked on the streets and not rounded up, so I suppose they’re not all bad, but he could have easily been posturing in front of us.Show this thread -
Detainees asked how they were supposed to get home, since it was now approaching 1am and subways shut down till 5am- you know- because of disinfecting for this whole pendemic thing. Cops told them “Guess you’ll just have to walk.”

I’m going to get tested for
@COVID19 and will do so again in a week. I’m totally traumatized. So is my family who watched this unfold.@NYCMayorsOffice@BilldeBlasio@NYPDnewsShow this thread -
To everyone out there marching & risking their health & their safety during this pandemic, keep fighting the good fight. Its so important, these cops are a VERY long way from changing.

There is one more thing that needs to be addressed. And its important. I’ve gotten a few comments & DMs from friends & people I don’t know as to why I called 911 on the looters at Duane Reade. And its a fair question.
Show this thread -
The Duane Reade is in a residential building. I wasn’t sure what could happen next. Would it just be looted? Could someone set the place on fire? There is no handbook for whats happening. I wish there was.

This is, in large part, about us educating ourselves & each other. The
#NYPD & law enforcement around the country has exhibited awful behavior this past week.Show this thread -
I don’t believe calling 911 was exactly the right move here, but I’m also not sure what would be. Until there is real reform to our law enforcement system, I think everyone should take a beat before they make that call. It truly could cost more lives than it would by not calling.
