Just spent the morning in tears, listening to the end of 's seductive and inspiring biography of Mike Nichols, which makes you feel like you've known and loved the greatest friend and mentor you never had.

In the UK it’s starting to feel like America has reneged on our suicide pact the second after we downed our kool-aid.

These photos only exist so one day when my kids ask “what was it like when the president got impeached twice?” I’ll have visual references for it.

Of the many accounts I've read of the attack on the Capitol this by is one of the most revealing and terrifying. The rioters are a new reality in America; ordinary, violent, delusional, excited and highly motivated. They aren't going away. Please read.

It’s now imperative that PM seeks an agreement to extend the Brexit transition period. The new Covid strain - & the various implications of it - means we face a profoundly serious situation, & it demands our 100% attention. It would be unconscionable to compound it with Brexit.

Muslims didn’t visit homes on Eid, Hajj didn’t take place, no Diwali for Hindus, no Vaisakhi for Sikhs. Yet at Christmas it’s perfectly legal to have three families over for 5 days - illegal during the entire pandemic. Never let it be said that minorities don’t put Britain first.

Like all former diarists, I love the idea that a single, simple anecdote can be more telling than reams of biography & reportage. Cummings doctoring his own blog to pretend that he’d predicted the pandemic should have received a lot more attention.

I worry that this seismic change to our constitution is not being given the attention it urgently warrants. So I'll say again: The government wants to abolish jury trials in order to address a court backlog caused by its own cuts, under the pretence that it was caused by Covid.
