In Delaware, the minimum wage for tipped workers has not gone up for more than 30 years. It was $2.23/hr then and it's $2.23/hr now. 🧵👇🏻

Tipped workers used to be paid 66.67% of the minimum wage. So, as the minimum wage went up the tipped wage did too. But in 1989, our General Assembly changed the tipped wage to a flat $2.23/hour. It hasn't gone up since.

In 2009, of states that had a tipped wage higher than the federal minimum, Delaware's tipped workers got the lowest share of state minimum wage—31%. Now that minimum wage has increased to $9.25/hr, tipped workers are doing even worse. They're making only 24% of the minimum wage.pic.twitter.com/SHJKlPfqBe

In 30 years tipped workers have lost ground. They used to be paid 66.67% of the minimum wage. Now they're only paid 24%. But tipped workers are still required to make minimum wage when their hourly wage and hourly tips are combined.

Because the state allowed the gap between the tipped wage and the minimum wage to grow, employers get away with contributing just 24% of a tipped workers minimum wage. Now worker's tips have to cover 76% of their minimum wage. In 1989, tips only covered 33%.

This is how policy decisions help bosses at the expense of workers. Raise the minimum wage to $15 and end the tipped wage.

All for raising min wage but what do you say to the instances in which tips cover a substantial amount of earned wages? Many service industry jobs see tipped employees far out-earning their non tipped hourly and salary coworkers.

the worst part is so many people don’t know that if your tips don’t bring you to the min wage your boss has to chip in to cover the difference! when I started a waitressing job last fall, when I got my 2nd paycheck (1st was min wage because i was training)

I immediately knew it was wrong bc it was just $2.23 x hours and we were so slow that I don’t think I actually worked a shift where I made enough tips to fill the gap! Was going to go to my manager (who was also a new hire) to get it corrected,

Raising the minimum wage to $15 will cause massive inflation. Raising the minimum for tipped workers is not a bad idea though.

That’s just not true. Real wages have been stagnant for 40 years while everything else increased

I encourage you to learn about Progressive Labor Standards...penned by @NickHanauer in @DemJournal Why fight for $15 when the minimum wage, if adjusted w/GDP, would be $20+/hr..https://democracyjournal.org/magazine/51/progressive-labor-standards/ …

Once you're officially a US Senator, I'd encourage you to lift the overtime threshold; it's ridiculously low right now. In fact, now that I think about it, many OT laws serve to further suppress wages & keep #WeThePeople down & out.

Tipping is stupid. I've lived a combined total of 4 years in countries that don't do tipping, and it's just better for everyone. Workers are paid fairly and in a stable and predictable. Customers don't have to calculate a tip and/or carry cash. Cost increase of goods is small.

Ending the tipped wage isn’t the answer. It may not seem like it, but there is a ladder in this industry. The more you learn, the more qualified you are to work in more high end places, which makes you more money in tips. Give everyone $15/hr that incentive goes away.
