Here's the thing about these programs: 🔸You are expected to work full-time for as little as $13,992/yr 🔸You're not guaranteed housing or healthcare 🔸This is all taxable income, INCLUDING your education grant We need to pay people a living wage, not exploit their labor.https://twitter.com/ChrisCoons/status/1258808970329968640 …

Our bold new legislation to expand @AmeriCorps will help communities across the country respond and recover from #COVID19. It’s been an inspiring group effort to make this plan a reality. #Stand4Service pic.twitter.com/Dry5eVrtHo

@chriscoons would you let your kids enter this program with no help from you? Doubt it. Stipend doesn't cover rent and basics. Foolish to think that this is the big plan.

I loved my Americorps experience. But I barely got by with the pay. It was a full time position. I had to work a second job. And I had to use food stamps and Medicaid. I had to commute 30-60 minutes depending on snow because I couldn't afford to live in the town I worked in.

I have a few friends that slept in bed bunks in multi room apartments while doing Teach for America. They loved their students and the people they met, but the conditions are ridiculous.

Yes, these volunteers need to earn enough to pay for basics—and get insurance as a benefit!
