The narrative that students with debt should have picked better majors to get higher paying jobs is bogus. For one, education is valid no matter whether it leads to wealth. Two, the loans are predatory and people pay thousands of dollars only to owe more than they borrowed.
The burden of education belongs on society, not the individual. When we educate ourselves we all benefit.
Education is a public good.
If we don't start making college free and forgiving debt, college attendance is going to crash with the next generation when it's parents in debt. Who can pay off their own education and then a kid's when a bachelors can cost six figures?
You're right. I talk to people who struggle every month to afford their own student loans and child care for their kids. If we don't fix it, the ability to pay will become an even bigger barrier to education and it will only be accessible to the wealthy.
