March 2015: Obama administration cites “the safety and well-being of all Yemeni civilians” in its decision to support the Saudi-led coalition’s military action against Yemen. So two different humanitarian appeals to justify two different forms of violence.
Militarized responses are always harder to undo. The recent decision to cut aid reportedly culminated several weeks of discussion. Conversely, it took several *years* for the US to stop arming the Saudi-led coalition.
For example, Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) voted to sustain US complicity in the Saudi-led coalition’s atrocities in Sept 2016 (S.J.Res.39) He finally voted against unconditional US support for the coalition in June 2017 (S.J.Res.42)—over two years after the US’ entrance into the war.
Ending militarism abroad starts at home. This isn't just about new policies — it’s about new people. A long/daunting task, sure, but there's no reason this can't be fun (for example, I can't be the only one who finds the @JessforDelaware campaign so energizing).
Wow, great points and thanks so much for sharing, Stephen!
