He’s not saying he’s against it. I don’t like Coons, but the headline mischaracterizes what he said. History may look back and judge otherwise. He didn’t say he would.

It's very clear that he's implying that he'd like to think diversity wouldn't cause "irreconcilable discord", but history will "judge otherwise." That's entirely inappropriate for an elected to say.
