Talk about universal childcare has to include workers’ wages, too. Families feel strangled by the costs of childcare, but the workers caring for their kids aren’t the beneficiaries of those costs. When my sister worked at a day care center she made just $8.50 an hour.

She was doing the work of teaching, nurturing, and protecting other people’s children (often for more than 8 hours a day) yet making less than $18,000 a year. That wage is in no way commensurate with the value of the work.
